Sponge iron and fluxes are fed continuously to an electric arc furnace via a hole in the side wall by means of a mechanical slinger or carrier gas. The charge can be directed to cover hotter spots in the furnace and thereby equalise temp. distribution, giving better protection to roof and walls. In an example, to a charge of 80 tons of melted scrap 150 tons of sponge iron were added in 111 mins. The load factor was 645 kWh/t steel.
