Beech veneers are coated with phenolic resin so that they are only impregnated to about one quarter of their thickness on each side. They are laid up and hot pressed at less than 150 kg/sq.cm. but with all veneers, excepting the core, wrapped round the core at at least one edge. Such an edge becomes more highly densified than the rest of the laminate and provides protection for the core against water penetration. The pressing surfaces only are lubricated.
