The intervals between the printing on the cover strip are slightly greater than those between the containers to which it is fitted, and the strip is shortened by forming folds in it. Shaping, embossing and sealing strips in succession form a step and a fold in the cover strip, and secure it in position near a transverse rib joining the containers. A further strip can be provided, to act as an anvil during the folding and sealing operations. A sprag can be provided to hold the stepped portion in shape in the cover strip. The advantage is that the cover strip can be fed forwards by grips, as there are no preformed ribs in it.
