Screen for the protection of the high furnace throat in front of the direction against wear by reducing the influence of high temperatures on the furnace throat funnel

Wear on the seating of the large bell of a blast furnace is reduced by fitted a tapered skirt ring round the hopper. The ring is secured to the superstructure of the furnace, and its middle part should be 50-600 mm from the hopper wall, while its lower end should be as near as possible to the lower flange of the hopper, about 10-35 mm. The layer of gas between the ring and the hopper reduced the temp. of the hopper by 130-150 degrees C, and the variation of temp. is =80 degrees C compared with 160 degrees C without the skirt.
