formed as by-prod. in MeOH prepn. by reaction of C oxides with H2 at raised temps. and pressures in presence of Zn- and Cr-contg. oxide catalysts, and sepd. in a distn. zone, is treated with steam in 1:0.5 to 1:4 (esp. 0.7 to 1.5) wt. ratio in the presence of gamma-Al2O3 at 200-300 degrees C and reaction mixt. is recycled to distn. zone. Simple re-conversion of Me2O to MeOH is economically integrated with MeOH is economically integrated with MeOH synthesis; use of gamma-Al2O3 catalyst allows reaction to be effected with low steam addn.
