The exhaust gases are (I) indirectly cooled to 150-600 degrees C (2) passed through a ceramic carrier for noble metal catalysts to reduce nitrogen oxides by the hydrocarbons or CO present, (3) indirectly cooled, opt. with cold fresh air, to a temp. above the dew pt. of water, (4) passed through a layer of granular active carbon to adsorb the hydrocarbons, and (5) passed through a catalyst layer to oxidise CO.
