The dyes have the formula I or II: (where Q is O or NR; R is an aliphatic or aromatic; Z1 and Z2 are the atoms required for a naphthalene ring; L1, L2 and L3 are each opt. substd. methine gps.; R1 is a substituent of the type present in cyanine N atom; n is 1 or 2; m is 1, 2 or 3; Z3 is the atoms required for a heterocyclic N-contg. ring; and M+ is a cation).
