Hydrogenation of aromatic cpds. to the corresp. cycloaliphatic cpds. with H2-contg. gases, is effected, with 98-100% yields, at 30-250 degrees C 50 atmos. press. using a catalyst prepd. by pptn. of a Ru hydroxide, e.g. Ri(OH)4 prepd. from ruCl3.H23. Pref. uses are hydrogenation of mono- or polynuclear aromatic mono- or diamines, partic. 4.4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (I) and Me-substd. derivs. mono- nuclear nitriles or aromatic ketones, substd. mono-nuclear nitriles or monoamines with additional NO2-substituents; mono-nuclear aromatic mono- and dicarboxylic acids and Me esters; mono- and di-nuclear hydrocarbons; N-contg. heterocycles.
