A decorative picture or design, made up from ceramic colourants, which is known per-se and may be sepd. by wetting from a carrier paper, is stuck onto an unglazed or glazed article which it is intended to decorate, before firing, using a water-activatable adhesive layer. PVA, substd. cellulose or dispersions of polyacrylate salts with carboxylic acid gps. are suitable. The decorative transfers adhere firmly to the not-yet-fired article, therefore no glue soln. or dispersion is required for fixing. The transfers need not have a film of lacquer mask over the coloured print.
