Furnace assembly for the prodn. of sintered materials generally in accordance with the double shaft furnace disclosed in the parent application but incorporating the improvement whereby control air is supplied to the combustion radiation chamber to optimise the combustion and may be (a) fresh air from the atoms, (b) hot waste gases from the furnace itself, (c) hot waste gases from some external aggregate, (d) a mixture of gases from (a) (b) and (c) controlled by valves.
