A lathe has a force equalisation unit which hydraulically balances out the axial forces exerted from the centre of a headstock to the spindle bearing of the main spindle. The cylinder chamber inside the headstock (1) has an annular chamber (c) between the tubular intermediate part (10), of a collar around the main spindle (2), and a sleeve (9) around the collar as well as in each case circular flanges (9a, 10a) which axially seal off the chamber. The piston surfaces which are acted upon by pressure medium are of the same size in the cylinder chamber of the tailstock (21) and the headstock (1).
