14-beta-hydroxy-steroids - as digitoxigenin -inters from a lactone with phenyllithium and subsequent ozonolysis

Cpds. of formulae (A), (B) and (C) where R=alkanoyl or aralkanoyl or (C onyl)=H; R1 =H2 or =O; R2=alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl, are inters. for cardioactive digitoxigenins. The cpds. are prepd. by a simplified process for introducing the 14beta-OH gp. from a 3-acyloxy-22-hydroxy-steroid with PBr3 via the 14,22-epoxide (A) which on oxidn. (Cr2O3 or RuO4) and treatment with Li-org. cpds. gives (B) which on ozonolysis gives a 20-oxo cpds. as digitoxigenin-precursor.
