The pipe coupling is used for pipe ends arranged at an angle to each other. The sloping ends of the pipes have flanges which are brought into contact and rotated until they are aligned for connecting purposes. On aligning the pipe axes the minimum and maximum gap widths between the pipe ends and also their deepest position are noted. A corresponding pattern plate is provided to simulate the pipe laying on board of the vessel. The pattern and the pipe ends under water are actuated together and the gaps corresponds in both assemblies. The pattern has a frame and baseplate which supports the short simulating pipe ends. The coupling elements are locked after the correct position has been reached. The pipe ends under water have clamped central pins which serve as indicators on joining the pipe ends and are removed when actual clamping takes place.
