C and S contents of metals and alloys are determined directly from the workpiece by locating an hermetic heating chamber over the body which has at least one electrode and gas conduits to and away from the chamber. An arc is struck between the electrode and workpiece in the presence of O2 and a certain amount of metal is oxidised. The required amounts are determined using a light intensity meter measuring the light given off from the activated metal atoms in the gas above the body.
