Mg die casting alloys with good physical props. and surfaces generally free from defects can be made by additions of 3-45% Zn, 0-12% Al and 0-1% Zr to melts of 99.8% Mg. The general alloy types are Mg-Zn-Al; Mg-Zn-Zr. In Mg-Zn-Al alloys, Zn is 12-35% with Al % = 11.5 - 0.5(x-12) where X = % Zn, 12, or % Al =0.5 (12-% Zn); for Mg-Zn-Zr, Zn is 12-45%, Zr 0.01 - 1%. Conventional methods of die casting, including die lubrication are used.
