1395425 Graphite electrode ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES ASSOCIATES Inc 2 Aug 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36133/72 Heading C7B An electrode for anodic stripping voltammetry comprises a conductive graphite support member impregnated with insulating material to render at least the surface of the member non-porous, the surface being smooth and comprising islands of graphite in a continuous matrix of insulating material and, deposited on the islands of graphite, corresponding islands of metal. The impregnating material may be a paraffin wax having a melting point in the range 60-65‹C. The insulating material is removed from the surface e.g. by scraping or abrasion to lay bare islands of graphite and then the islands of metal, such as mercury are deposited on the exposed graphite electrolytically. The electrode with mercury deposit, may be used to test for the presence of cadmium, copper, bismuth, tantalum, strontium or lead. A platinum coated electrode may be used to test for mercury. To prevent inactivation of the electrode during a test, the lower portion of the electrode has a rounded or pointed configuration to avoid the accumulation thereon of gas bubbles.
