Bituminous binders prodn - by mixing oxidised petroleum vac-distn residues and deasphaltisation bitumens

Bitumens binders, for use in sealing materials and esp. for road surfacing, are produced by (a) oxidising a pertroleum vacuum-distn. residue (pref. from a middle-east chute) to give an oxidised residue, pref. by blowing in air at 240-270 degrees C until the residue has a normal penetration of 5-50; (b) fractionating another (same or different) petroleum vacuum-disnt. residue to give a deasphalted residue and a bitumen (pref. with a normal penetration of 5-15); (c) mixing 1 pbw of the oxidised residue from (a) with 0.5-2 (pref. ca. 1) pbw of the bitumen from (b); and (d) adding a suitable plasticiser (pref. a portion of the starting material) to the mixt. to adjust the hardness to the required value.
