A deuterated nitroxide radical consists of tetramethyl 2,2,5,5-aza-1 cyclopentane oxa-3- oxyl-1. This is prepd. by hydrolysis of deuterated hydantoin (dimethyl-5,5 hydantoin) to alpha-aminoisobutyric acid and then esterified to the methyl ester chlorhydrate which is reduced with LiAlD4 to the deuterated amine alcohol (alpha-amino-2-methylpropanol) and condensed with deuterated acetone (mole ratio 1:1) to give the oxazolidine (tetramethyl 2,2,5,5-oxazolidine) followed by oxidn. The radical has pronounced affinity for magnetic rays and is used in magnetometry.
