Heat exchanger tubing is wound spirally between, and in contact with, two parallel walls of shell so that shell-side flow is defined, being virtually of constant speed, parallel to, and continuously countercurrent to, tube-side flow. The design method may be applied to cylindrical, conical, or disc shaped exchangers, which are constructed easily, without use of baffle plates, and may contain several ranks of tubes, each tube being sandwiched between plates. Shell-side flow rate is pref. 1-2 m/s, and with exchange between two streams of water, coeffts. of 2700-4300 Kcal/h/m2/degrees C are attainable.
