Na is produced, e.g. fro m Na2CO3 and coke, providing a CO/Na mixt., by condensing the Na vapour on one side of, and allowing non-condensible gases to pass through, the heat exchanger. The condensed, liq. Na is then fed to the second side of the heat exchanger by a press.-relief valve, where there is a lower temp. and press., but sufficient to discharge the Na. Part of the driven-off Na vapour is removed and the second portion is passed to a Na condenser/water evaporator where the Na condenses to a liq. and the heat released forms steam. The liq. Na is then returned from the evaporator to the second side of the heat exchanger.
