In the vertical tower, particularly a pneumatic drier, particles are continuously fed into a treatment zone where they become suspended in a rising current of treatment gas, usually air which has been dried and blown in through an air heater, the treatment zone has a leg which extends down into a tank of water sufficiently far to remain immersed even when treatment pressure prevails in the tower. Any particles which agglomerate and become incandescent tend to fall into the tank and become extinguished. The leg provides an explosion vent through the liquid if dangerous pressure arises occur.
