The gas mixture for a carbon monoxide laser is adjusted to have the following composition 0.50 to 5.0 (1.8-5.0) torr CO, 25 to 100 (50-63) torr He, 2 to 50 (12-15) torr N2 and O2 or NO at a rate of 0.01 to 2% (0.07%) of the proportion of CO. In addition, the gas mixture contains 1 to 5 torr xenon.
