A starch (a) is reacted with a polyfunctional amine (b) in an acid medium and the prodn. reacted with an alkalene oxide (c) or halogen epoxide (d), pref. in an alkaline medium. (a) is pref. maize, wheat, potato, rice or tapioca starch or their wax-like modifications, and (b) contains =2 amino H atoms, attached to different N atoms, being pref. an amino-amide esp. urea. (c) pref. contains 2-4C and (d) 3-4C. The product is pref. reacted with a condensing aldehyde e.g.- HCHO to a polymeric resin. The materials are suitable as coatings for high-grade papers, to which they form an excellent bond, for addition to moist pulps to raise the strength of the paper, for coating of metal surfaces, application to textiles for permanent pleating, resistance to creasing, shrinkage and water, and as moulding compsns. for containers, etc. They can also be reacted with isocyanates to give urethanes esp. foams.
