The heat treatment comprises (a) solution treatment in the alpha/beta range near the beta transformation temp. pref. within 55 degrees for 1-4 hrs., so that a small amt. of spheroidal alpha phase is formed, (b) rapid cooling by quenching in a suitable liquid to a temp. below the alpha transformation temp., (c) reheating to the soln. treatment temp. in the alpha/beta range near the alpha transformation temp. pref. within 110 degrees C and holding at that temp. for 1-24 hrs. so that needle- like alpha phase is formed, (d) cooling and subsequently ageing the alloy.
