The gas is blown through a sheet of water where it shoots off the end of an inclined plate with water running down one side only of the plate. A baffle plate underneath the inclined plate extends under the wet side and is bent up along-side the dry side to form a channel to hold a supplementary supply of water, held there by gas stream pressure. If a break occurs in the water sheet, it is immediately made good from the supplementary channel-released by pressure drop through the break.
