Prepn. of pure 1-aminoanthraquinone (I) from a crude mixt. of nitroanthraquinones contg. =60% 1-nitroanthraquinone is by redn. of the mixt. with 60-80% H2SO4 contg. a metal, Fe or Cu. at 20-130 degrees pref. 70-100 degrees, the amt. of metal being 3 g-atoms per mol. nitro compd. When redn. is complete, the liquor is filtered off, the residue washed with 60-80% H2SO4 and to the combined filtrate and washings, water is added to ppte. the 1-aminoanthraquinone sulphate which is filtered off and hydrolysed to yield I.
