1310914 Yarns IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 July 1970 [16 July 1969 20 Feb 1970 12 March 1970] 35772/69 Heading D1W Overlapping, optionally slightly intertwisted, ends of two continuous filaments or continuous multifilament yarns are joined by bonding with an adhesive and shrinking a sheath therearound. Thus the yarn may be formed by coating the overlapping ends with a solution of a polymeric adhesive, capable of adhering to the filaments, in a solvent therefor which is not a solvent for the material of the filaments, and removing the solvent from the adhesive, e.g. by heat treatment, to form the bond either before covering the bonded end portions with a shrinkable sheath or simultaneously with the final shrinking, by heat treatment, of the sheath. The filaments may be of polyethylene terephthalate and polyhexamethylene adipamide or glass. The sheath may be formed by a shrinkable nylon or polyester tie-yarn composed of a single monofilament or a low denier multifilament yarn wrapped in a tight spiral around the bonded end portions with the ends secured thereto. Heat treatment may be effected by air at a temperature of 80-230‹C. The adhesive may be a 20% solution of ethylene isophthalate/terephthalate copolymer in chloroform or a solution of a methoxy-methylated nylon polymer in aqueous alcohol.
