The means communicating with the interior of the bell may be either a pump 3 having its intake 4 within the bell and its discharge 5 outside the bell or a conduit having one end communicating with the interior of the bell and the other end connectable through valving to either a source of compressed air or to atmosphere. With the latter form of the means air is fed into the bell as it is lowered and, when the bell engages the ground, this air is vented to atmosphere.
