1334720 Vicinal diols PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 24 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 54611/71 Heading C2C Vicinal diols are prepared from olefins by: (i) dissolving water and an olefin (a compound having one or more ethylenic double bonds) in an amide/organic acid azeotropic solvent; and (ii) adding Cl 2 , Br 2 or I 2 to the solution and maintaining the reaction mixture at 100‹ C- 300‹ C. The olefin is preferably of the formula where the radicals R can be the same or different and are a hydrogen atom or alkyl, aryl, carboxyalkyl, alkoxy, alkylglycerylester, alkyl ester, nitroalkyl, haloalkyl or polyalkoxyalkyl radicals containing from 1 to 25 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl radical of 3 to 8 carbon atoms. Examples include the preparation 1-decene, oleic acid and soybean oil glycols. The glycols may be used as plasticizers or as starting materials for the preparation of carboxylic acids.
