PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF PETROLEUM JELLY AND PLASTIC AND HARD HYDROCARBON WAXES

1334932 Separating wax-petroleum jelly from slack wax PETROLCHEMISCHES KOMBINAT SCHWEDT VEB 10 Feb 1971 4361/71 Headings C5E and C5W Petroleum jelly and plastic and hard hydrocabon waxes are obtained from crude petroleum (slack) waxes by an initial catalytic hydrorefining at 380-410‹ C. and a pressure above 100 atm. followed by a two- or three-stage solvent extraction with a low-boiling ketone with or without aromatic solvents; the twostage extraction being conducted (i) at - 5‹ to 10‹ C. and a product : solvent volume ratio of 1 : 4-6, and (ii) at 10-25‹ C. at a ratio of 1 : 4-7, and the three-stage extraction (i) at 0-25‹ C. and 1 : 5-7, (ii) at 25-35‹ C. and 1 : 8-15, and finally (iii) at - 10‹ to 10‹ C. and 1 : 15-30. The solvent is preferably acetone/ benzene/toluene. In the example the hydrofining catalyst consisted of 17% MoO 3 and 4À5% NiO on 78À5% Al 2 O 3 . In the two-stage process a petroleum jelly component was obtained in the first, and a further petroleum jelly plus a microwax in the second stage. In the three-stage process the first stage yielded a petroleum jelly, the second a hard microwax, and the third a plastic microwax plus a run-oil which was recycled. The petroleum jelly components are mixed as required to form a crude petroleum jelly for hydrofinishing, and the microwaxes are treated with bleaching powder.
