1336050 Aqueous polyurethane dispersions BAYER AG 14 July 1971 [18 July 1970] 33038/71 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions B2 C2 and Dl] Emulsifier-free, aqueous polyurethane dispersions are obtained by reacting an isocyanate prepolymer with a sulphonate salt of formula wherein MSP+/SP is an alkali metal or a substituted or unsubstituted ammonium cation, n is an integer from 2 to 12 and m is 1 or 2, and then adding water. The isocyanate prepolymer is preferably prepared from at least one high molecular weight (e.g. 300-20,000) polyhydroxyl compound and at least one polyisocyanate, optionally together with at least one low molecular weight ( 300) chain lengthening agent comprising reactive hydrogen atoms. The polyurethane dispersions, which may subsequently be cross-linked, produce threads, adhesives and dimensionally stable foils or coatings when dried. The polyurethane produced preferably comprises 0À5 to 7% by weight of sulphonate groups. Examples 3 to 5 describe the preparation of polyurethane foils and films by drying dispersions obtained by reacting (i) a prepolymer, obtained from hexane-1,6-diisocyanate and a polyester of adipic acid and ethylene glycol, with the sodium salt of the compound of formula (A) wherein m = n = 2, (ii) a prepolymer, obtained from hexane-1,6-diisocyanate and a polyester of adipic acid, hexane-1,6-diol and neopentylglycol, with the potassium salt of the compound of formula (A) wherein m = 2 and n = 6 and (iii) a prepolymer, obtained from tolylene diisocyanate and polypropylene glycol ether, with the sulphonate salt of (i).
