Optically active chelates of the formula Chel.and Chel.polyamine of a variety of types defined in the specification; M is Li, Na, Be, Mg, Zn, Cu or Cd; Z is a reactive anion of a variety of types defined in the specification; m is 1 or 2 according to the valency of M; n is 0 or 1; Y is an inert anion; and organometallic reagents in asymmetric syntheses. They react with prochiral unsatd. substrates to form optically active chelate products from which products of high chemical and optical purity can be isolated. Those cpds. which are reducing agents can be used for the reductive optical resolution and optically active organolithium chelates can be used for introducing metal into polymers to give metal-contg. polymers which can be reacted with prochiral substrates so as to obtain polymers with optically active functional gps.
