1319142 Rare earth intermetallic compounds GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 38192/70 Heading ClA [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Rare earth intermetallic compounds (e.g. Co 5 Sm) are prepared by heating a particulate mixture of the rare earth metal oxide and calcium hydride to at least 850‹ C. to reduce the oxide, fusing the resulting mixture with CO, Fe, Co/Fe alloys, Co/Fe/Mn alloys, Fe/Mn alloys and Co/Mn alloys, allowing the resulting rare earth intermetallic compound containing mixture to solidify, pulverizing the mixture and then extracting the intermetallic compound therefrom. The calcium hydride may be formed in situ and used in excess of the stoichiometric amount for the reduction of the oxide.
