Activated free-flowing coke - by treating petroleum coke with steam, esp for waste water treatment

An activated free-flowing coke (I) has a surface of is not 400 m2 g-1 (is not 500 m2 g-1) and pore vol of is not 0.2 cm3g-1(is not 0.3 cm3 g-1), and is activated by treatment with a gas stream contg. steam, at is not 815 degrees C for a sufficient time to convert is not 35 (45-70) wt. % of the coke to gaseous prods. (I) is used for removing organic impurities from waste water, e.g. ind. wastes, petroleum wastes or domestic wastes. A process is provided for activating petroleum coke, giving a prod. of good adsorption capacity. The coke particles show 1% abrasion during use as adsorbent and during regeneration by burning off the adsorbed impurities. The coke is more inert chemically than activated carbon; this facilitates regeneration.
