Aromatic cpds. are produced from completely or partially chlorinated hydrocarbons by substg. the Cl with aromatic gps., e.g. by reacting the Cl cpds. with benzene, toluene, xylene, etc., in the presence of catalysts e.g. AlCl3, FeCl3, H2SO4 etc., recovering the inters. and subjecting them to thermal or catlytic cracking to give mainly aromatic prods. Process is useful for treating chlorinated cpds., obtd. as end prods., inters. and waste materials, to give useful aromatic cpds.
