The novel alkaloid has the following characteristics:- m. pt. 159 degrees C (decompsn.) (alpha) D: -33.2 degrees (CHCls, C = 0.1), uv: lambda max (omage): 248 (8000), 293 (5000), IR in cm-1: 1740, 1620, 1240, 1050, 1010, M+ to 384, nmr: peaks at 1.93, 2.7, 4.23, 5.16, 6.55, 7.32 ppm, formula: C22H28N2O4, mol.wt. 384. A spegazzinii is a large tree of the Apocynaceae family, and is found in the forests of Argentina and Paraguay. The bark is extracted with benzene, CHCl3 or CH2Cl2, and the extract is washed with a dilute aq. acid. The washing liquors are made alkaline to ppte. the total alkaloid bases, which are sepd. by chromatography on alumina.
