1402505 Supercharging diesel engines SULZER BROS Ltd 15 March 1973 [27 April 1972] 12577/73 Heading F1B A diesel engine 1 with an exhaust gas driven turbo-blower 6, 7 is started by compressed air fed to the cylinders from a reservoir 12 through valves 10 and compressed air is also fed to the cylinders when the engine is being accelerated and/or when the engine is subjected to an abrupt increase in load with the engine running at at least 50% of the normal operating speed. The valves 10 may be operated mechanically or pneumatically under the control of a valve 15 driven by the engine crankshaft. An electricity generator 3 has a controller 18 connected to its output wires 4 and operates an electromagnetic valve 14 in the air supply line 14. The valve 14 may be opened in response to a fall in engine speed or in response to a change in electrical frequency or load. The compressed air may continue to be supplied after starting until the engine has reached at least 50% of its normal speed. The engine may operate on a two or fourstroke cycle.
