Water contaminated by organic cpds. is purified at 0-100 degrees C by introducing an amount of the contaminated water into a tank, adding active C to form a suspension, stirring the mixt. and contacting with an O2-contg. gas, esp. by setting up dissolved O2-content 1-9 mg/l. For treating industrial and municipal waste water esp. water from sulphate paper pulp prodn. Waste water colour can be reduced from 500-1000 APHA colour units 100 APHA colour units; active C works independently of biological activity, with high adsorption velocity, and is easily regenerated. Amount of active C added is 50-200g. per 1. of contaminated water. Active C pref. has 0.42-0.074 mm particle size. After treatment, active C can be separated from water and re-used for treating a further charge of contaminated water.
