[Also in Division D2] Polycondensates are prepared by a two-stage process: (i) dicyandiamide or cyanamide is condensed (e.g. at 130-160‹ C.) with a polyamine containing at least 3 primary and/or secondary amino groups; (ii) the polycondensate of stage (i) is reacted (e.g. at 60‹ to 100‹ C.) with an epihalohydrin, e.g. epichlorohydrin. For every equivalent of primary amino groups in the polyamine, there may be used 0À2 to 2À0 moles of cyanamide or 0À1 to 1À0 moles of dicyandiamide; 0À3 to 3À0 moles of epihalohydrin may be used for each equivalent of secondary amino groups of the polyamine in the second stage. Part of the dicyandiamide or cyanamide may be replaced by another polyfunctional compound capable of condensing with the polyamine, e.g. a dicarboxylic acid such as adipic acid or its mono- or di-alkyl esters. The polycondensates are water soluble, thermocurable resins suitable for treating paper to improve its wet strength.
