A knitted fabric tube, e.g. an article of hose, is closed by knitting a separate constricted portion 15 while the tube 14 is held on the needles and subsequently joining the two portions with a connecting course. The closure portion may be constricted by a wrapping yarn 17, or may comprise a twisted double welt. In one method the tube is completed with a non- run portion. Thereafter alternate needles are directed to a low inactive level; the intervening needles releasing their loops before knitting the closure in conjunction with instruments of a second bed 11. In an alternative method the tube loops are held at a low level on all needles while alternate ones are active in knitting the closure. After held by instruments of the second bed loops have been transferred to cylinder needles courses of non-run fabric are knitted to join the separate portions. The bulk of the closure may be reduced by knitting with a thinner yarn, or incorporating tuck or miss stitches in the centre of the closure.
