1360753 Ethylene-carboxylic acid copolymers GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 10 April 1972 [22 April 1971] 16375/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division B5] The optical properties of an ethylene-carboxylic acid copolymer containing 10-15 weight per cent of the carboxylic acid are improved by contacting the solid copolymer with a solvent for polyethylene which will preferably not dissolve more than 30% by weight of the copolymer at a temperature of at least 50‹ C. but below the boiling point of the solvent and then separating the solvent containing a dissolved portion of the copolymer from the solid ethylene-carboxylic acid copolymer. The solvent may be xylene, benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethylene, chlorobenzene and orthodichlorobenzene. In the examples an ethyleneisopropylacrylate copolymer is thermally cracked to produce an ethylene acrylic acid copolymer which is contacted with one of the above solvents. The product may be employed as an inner layer between two glass laminae, as a thermosetting film or as a film on a metallic or non-metallic substrate.
