1337208 Welding by pressure GENERAL MOTORS CORP 25 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 54733/71 Heading B3R A friction welding machine comprises a first workpiece holder and a second workpiece holder linearly movable relative to the first holder, a drive means to rotate the first holder relatively to the second holder and an outer workpiece support member mounted on the second holder adjacent the outer periphery of the second holder for limited rotary movement relative to the second holder. A head member 14 is secured to a motor driven spindle 12 by drive keys and bolts 16 and an adapter 18 is secured to the head member by drive key 20 and bolts 22. The adapter has a polygonal drive socket 24 into which the polygonal extension 26 of the hub 28 of a gas turbine rotor fits, a pilot member 30 projecting from the member 14 into the hub 28 and carrying a spring detent 32 to retain the hub in position. A tailstock 34 is fixed against rotation but is free for axial movement and carries a fixture 36 which includes an adapter 40 keyed and bolted to the tail stock and a holder 44 keyed and bolted to the adapter. The holder 44 has a polygonal socket 50 which receives the polygonal shoulder 51 of a nickel alloy bladed turbine ring 38. A shroud 54 in three separate segments is supported for limited rotation in a groove formed by an annular clamp member 68 and a retainer ring 57 clamped by a ring 58 to the adapter 40. A number of arms 72 bolted to the member 68 each carries a block 74 of elastomeric material to provide axial support for the blades. The weld interface is frusto-conical and during welding the forces involved cause the tips of the blades to contact the ring 54 which is free to move rotationally and thus transmits no tangential forces.
