Terminal slowdown control for elevator systems which includes spaced markers and a detector, mounted for relative movement as an elevator car approaches a terminal. The markers are spaced such that if the elevator car is approaching the terminal with a constant deceleration rate, the combination of the spaced markers and detector will produce pulses at a constant rate. If this constant rate is within a predetermined range, the slowdown is normal. If the rate is faster than a predetermined value, comparison means provides a speed error signal which may be used to initiate terminal slowdown, and the same speed error signal may be used to generate an auxiliary speed pattern voltage for use by the elevator control in bringing the car to a stop according to a predetermined deceleration schedule.
