1443572 Auxiliary axle suspensions TWM MFG 'CO Inc S TURNER JNR D S DENNISON C E WERN and L S TURNER 19 July 1973 [20 July 1972 29 Sept 1972 27 Feb 1973] 34314/73 Heading B7D An auxiliary axle suspension system in a vehicle having a plurality of axles one of which is lowered into an operative position only when required comprises at each end of the auxiliary axle 43 an upwardly-biased leaf spring 9 which normally holds the axle in a raised position, and air springs 33 which are positioned in front of and behind the axle between a longitudinal frame member 1 and a load arm structure 39 and can be inflated to lower the axle into the operative position. The air springs 33 are positioned so that the centre line of each spring is spaced from the centre line of the frame member 1 by not more than 20 per cent of the width of the spring. The leaf spring 9 is carried directly below the frame member 1 in hanger brackets 13. A radius rod 57 is connected between the axle and one hanger bracket. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the axle is cranked upwardly at each end and one end of each leaf spring is shackled to the hanger bracket so that no radius rod need be provided.
