Process comprises introducing the Al alloy into a transporter stream of Hg under atmos. pressure; transporting the Al/Hg mixt. downwards in a column of Hg (I) into the lower part of a dissolution zone (II); passing the mixt. in (I) into a reservoir in (II); heating the mixt. in (II) to ca 530 degrees C and keeping (II) under a pressure 11 atmos. by the wt of (I) and a second column of Hg (III) both of whose upper posns are under atmos. pressure; dissolving the Al from the alloy in the Hg in (II), sepg. the Al/Hg soln from the solid insoluble residue of the alloy in the reservoir; sepg. the Hg from the Al/Hg soln. then recycling part of the Hg into the top of (I); sepg. the solid insoluble impurities originally contained in the alloy from the reservoir and flowing them upwardly in (III); discharging the impurities under atmos pressure from the top of (III). sepg. an Al/Hg soln from the reservoir, cooling the soln to separate the Al by crystallisation; sepg. the Al crystals from the Hg. melting the crystals and sepg. pure Al, and recovering and recycling the Hg.
