Adamantanes (III): (where R1 is H or (1-6)C linear alkyl; R2 is H or 1-6C alkyl; n is 0 or 1 and X is Br, Cl or I) are prepd. by cyclisation of a corresponding (2-halogen-1-adamantane)-ethylamine (II), by hydrogen halide dissociation. (III) act as C.N.S. depressants for warm-blooded animals and can be given orally or parenterally. A dosage of =25 mg/kg body wt. can tranquillise the animals and render them easier to handle. (III) also have bacterial, amoebicidal and anti-trichomonal activity.
