[Also in Division F2] A marine propulsion system comprises an engine driving a propeller, an hydraulic turbocoupling 1 and a toothed clutch 2 positioned in parallel between the engine and the propeller, and control means allowing engagement of the clutch only when the engine is operating ahead above a predetermined speed and engine control means are set for low ahead output. In Fig. 1, engine driven shaft 4 is connected to rotor 3 of the turbo-coupling 1, the other rotor 5 being connected to a pinion shaft 6 driving the propeller. Clutch 2 comprises a sleeve 16 connected to the shaft 4 and having teeth 17 engageable with teeth 11 on a ring 10 connected to casing 7 on rotor 5. The sleeve 16 is moved by a lever 21 operated by a servomotor 23. In Fig. 10, engine control lever 24 and clutch control lever 27 are movable at right angles. A clutch control device is provided with a diaphragm 41 from which a rod 43 extends. The lower side of the diaphragm is connected to a pump driven by ahead rotation of pinion shaft 6. Above a predetermined ahead speed, rod 43 is extended to disengage projection 38 from arm 34 of lever 29. To engage the clutch, lever 24 is moved to a slow setting (Fig. 10) and, before the diaphragm rod 43 retracts, the lever 29 is moved back, the projection 35 passing through notch 28 in slot 27. Rotation of rod 30 actuates a valve controlling the servomotor 23 and teeth 17 and 11 are brought into end contact before driving engagement. The clutch can be disengaged by moving lever 29 forward when the lever 24 is in any position due to the chamfer on projection 35.
