A process for the preparation of leukocytes - and thrombocytes of poor banked blood

Preserved blood with low leucocyte and thrombocyte contents, for use with patients due to undergo organ transplants or having certain haematological-serological modifications, is produced by treating blood with a stabiliser, pref. citric acid/citrate/dectrose, and opt. a high mol. wt. cpd. esp. dextran of mol. wt. 50,000-250,000 pref. ca. 70,000 in a sterile container, and after completion of sedimentation, passing the sediment through an adsorption filter material into a second sterile container to reduce the leucocyte content to 1000/ul and the thrombocyte content to 20,000/ul. The adsorption filter material may be a wadding of fine natural and/or synthetic fibres, esp. polyamide fibres, or glass fibre, or may be a powder or granulate of these materials. The containers are pref. plastic bags connected by a tube contg. the filter material.
