[Also in Division C2] An adduct of germine and a halogenated hydrocarbon is prepared by subjecting germine values substantially free from protoveratrine (e.g. extracted from a plant of the genus veratrum) to hydrolysis in a basic system and treating the thus-obtained hydrolysate with a liquid, water-immiscible halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. methylene chloride, CHCl 3 , CCl 4 , CHCl 2 . CH 3 or CH 2 Cl. CH 2 Cl) in the presence of water to give an insoluble adduct which may be collected and decomposed, e.g. by treatment with an alcohol (e.g. an alkanol) and, optionally, an acid to yield free germine. The hydrolysing system preferably comprises an alcohol (e.g. a lower alkanol) and an alkali metal hydroxide.
