1281977 Fuel elements KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 19 Nov 1970 [3 Dec 1969] 55049/70 Heading G6C Nuclear fuel bodies are formed from metalcoated particles of fuel and/or fertile material, e.g. uranium or thorium oxide, having a diameter of several hundred microns, by compressing the particles in a vacuum at a pressure of 10SP-3/SP to 10SP-5/SP mm. Hg and a temperature of 800‹ to 2000‹ C. Suitable metals for the particle coatings are Mo, Zr, V and Nb, the coatings having a thickness of 2 to 10 Á. Under the above conditions, the particle coatings diffuse one into the other at their points of contact. The pressure applied is preferably several hundred pounds per cm.SP2/SP, e.g. 300 pounds per cm.SP2/SP The cavities between the individual particles of the fuel bodies allow throughflow of coolant, resulting in efficient heat removal.
